Townsville Connection Road and Bridge Duplication, North QLD

Townsville Connection Road (TCR Stage 2 and 4)  – Bowen Road Bridge Duplication (TCR) Stage 3, Townsville, North Qld (2024-2026)

The $61m (TCR 2 & 4) & $52m (TCR 3) Packages involve Road duplication and Active Transport infrastructure upgrades to the Townsville Connection Road (TCR) and Construction of the Bowen Road Bridge Duplication and approaches. The Project is being delivered for the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

This project is set to enhance safety and improve connectivity for all road users, with upgraded pedestrian and bicycle crossings, and a refurbished underpass pathway. With over 24,000 vehicles using the bridge daily, the project will see the established bridge be converted to two lanes for outbound traffic and the new bridge having two lanes for city-bound traffic. A 3m wide walkway and bike lane is also included as well as upgraded lighting, CCTV and over 150 trees will be added into the surrounding environment.

Scope of Work

Bridge Construction:

  • Installation of temporary works through the Ross River to construct a working platform
  • Earthworks to construct both the northern and southern bridge abutments
  • Excavation works of in-situ material to meet design requirements
  • Piling including installation of 1200mm diameter steel casing. Excavation of 55m3 of soil from each of the pile casings (total of 2750m3) to install reinforcement and concrete
  • Dewatering of the pile casing
  • Bridge substructure works including construction of piers and concreting works
  • Bridge superstructure works including bridge decking and concreting works
  • Drainage works for the bridge structure and connecting pavement works
  • Pavement works to the new bridge structure and connecting tie ins with Stuart Drive and the Bruce Highway
  • Upgraded lighting
  • CCTV installation
  • Upgrades to pedestrian and bike crossings to improve safety for all road users, as well as improved connections to a refurbished underpass pathway
  • Landscaping and revegetation in Ross River.

Notable Aspects

Roadworks Construction: 

The Project works include all infrastructure necessary to provide the safe and efficient passage of motor vehicles, pedestrians, disabled persons and cyclists:

  • Road Duplication and Active Transport Infrastructure Upgrades to the Townsville Connection Road (TCR)
  • Upgrade of Mervyn Crossman Drive/Fairfield Waters Drive/Stuart Drive roundabout and the Kokoda Street/Stuart Drive intersection to signalised intersections
  • Upgrade the Gartrell Drive/Stuart Drive intersection to a signalised intersection, including an access upgrade to the Townsville Pony club and Townsville Cycle club
  • Duplication of the section of Stuart Drive between the intersection of University Road-Racecourse Road/Stuart Drive and the southern abutment of the Bowen Road Bridge, from the existing two-lane undivided carriageway to a four-lane divided carriageway
  • Integration of pedestrian and cycle active transport infrastructure along the Stuart Drive corridor in alignment with TMR and local active transport planning / policy.
