SGQ Coral Coast Update – October 2024

It has proved a busy and productive period for SGQ in the Bundaberg – Coral Coast Region.

Wins:

SGQ were successful in the tender of TMR’s Isis Highway contract (Bundaberg Ring Rd to Park Estate Dr), with works starting in November.

SGQ’s tendering and prospective project team worked extensively to offer a cost-effective bid, with our well demonstrated community presence and long-standing investment in the region heavily factored into contract award.

The project will be delivered throughout 2024 & 2025 and will achieve

  • A Reduction in the number of conflict points, providing safer access to the Isis Highway with new service roads
  • Improvements and connections to existing intersections to facilitate safer turning, accommodate additional traffic, and reduce the risk of rear-end crashes along the busy stretch of highway
  • Pavement rehabilitation enhancing rideability and surface quality overall

Road widening greatly improving the separation between vehicles travelling in opposing directions, reducing the risk of head-on crashes.

New Starters & Additions:

The following new starters and updates for staff in the region

  • Brett Stone, who started with SGQ in October, adding to the growing team in Bundaberg, welcome aboard
  • In November we will also welcome Zakaria Modi to the crew as a site engineer for upcoming projects
  • Congratulations to Kyle Power and Ben Mallows, scheduled to come on board full-time on registered Traineeships, working toward their Certificate III in civil construction

Bundaberg Office and Depot Update:

Our Bundaberg Yard has hit some key milestones in the last few months including connection of power and completion of the Office building, as well as Seal of the Depot Carpark

Our supplier “Boral” commended the quality of the prepared pavement, well done to the SGQ crew completing, including Jamie Steemson on the grader

Project Spotlight

Duckpond Road Causeway

The project is being completed for Bundaberg Regional Council and includes the much-needed upgrade of the existing low crossing causeway to an improved box culvert crossing for future flood resilience.

The need for the causeway upgrade was justified during August, with flooding rain inundating the site. The project crew, led by Supervisor Shane Smith, managed to complete the culvert base slab and aprons just days prior to the weather event, mitigating impacts from the site experiencing 2m of water across the works.

Final concrete pour for the floodway structure will be completed by early November with all works expected to be completed mid-December prior to Xmas.

August Floods

Barolin Esplanade (Coral Cove Estate)

SGQ’s Bundaberg team led by Supervisor Jason McGuirk, completed the final touches on the Coral Cove Estate during the July-Oct period with PC awarded on October 15th.

The awarded works required complete construction of 80 residential lots as part of the future 1200 lot master planned estate (including reconfigured 18-hole golf course, retail center and tourism precinct). From all feedback the client and team are pleased with the result, proving valuable for all involved with fantastic block sales to date.

BRC Bonna Road Upgrade

The project under the Supervision of Simon McDonald, has progressed well into the final Stages of works approaching the Bonna Road – Childers Road intersection, despite challenging sub-grade incurred.

The project has required a number of tie-ins with residential driveways, of various treatments, along the length of works. Construction has been managed well onsite by the SGQ supervision and crew with great feedback from the affected residents on the communication and organization of works.

The Final bitumen seal and project completion is scheduled in November. Well done to those working onsite, now getting ready to get stuck into the ISIS highway works located right around the corner, utilizing the existing compound and site office area.
