Morayfield Road Upgrade, North Coast District

Morayfield Road Upgrade, North Coast District, Qld (2022-2023)

This $10.3m project involved road safety upgrades between Aquatic Centre Dr to Graham Rd, Inclusive of a new signalised intersection at Gleeson Rd (providing safer turning conditions), pedestrian crossings as well as widening and new centreline treatments to reduce the risk of head-on collisions. Along with extensive pavement rehabilitation of existing road surfaces, the project improved the network overall for the increasing population of the area. The client was the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

Scope of Work

  • Traffic management of busy urban connectors during construction
  • Clearing & grubbing works, including environmental management
  • Box-out & fill earthworks, subgrade and geogrid installation
  • Extensive removal and replacement of unsuitable material
  • Rock-improved subgrade treatments
  • RCP & RCBC culverts
  • Concrete & precast drainage infrastructure
  • Unbound pavements
  • Subsoil drainage, K&C
  • Bitumen seal, Heavy-Duty & EME2 AC works
  • Extensive use of AC Geosynthetics
  • Concrete paths, pram ramps, lined drains & traffic island construction
  • Electrical Infrastructure and street lighting installation
  • Traffic signals, detector loops, PTZ camera, ITS and communications network
  • Landscaping and Maintenance Program

Notable Aspects

  • Rating: R3 / F10 / A4
  • Successful Project Delivery on the busy arterial road managing extensive weather impacts
  • SGQ engaged in close collaboration with TMR to re-design pavement works
  • Extensive stakeholder & community liaison management
  • Expert Traffic management design, staging and execution on the 20,000-vehicle-per-day network
  • Safe Completion of substantial night work activities and maintenance of traffic signals and pedestrian/cycle pathways during construction
  • Construction method achievements: Major HD deep-lift AC pavements in time-limited traffic periods (night works) that required daily reopening to traffic

Value engineering options identified by SGQ included the following adopted methods:

  • Extensive subgrade investigation improved pavement rehab. design (with very large savings to TMR [>$500k.] & improved program)
  • Deep-lift pavement proposal enabled more efficient intersection works staging, with time savings, minimised traffic disruption & aiding tight workspaces/heavy vehicle interaction (turning radii)
