Boundary Road Extension, Hervey Bay

Boundary Road – Denmans Camp Rd to Kawungan Way, Hervey Bay – Fraser Coast, Qld (2021-2024)

The $30m project involved greenfield construction of the Boundary Road Extension. Included Construction of 1.9km of new four-lane dual-carriageway road, linking Boundary Rd (at Denman Camp Rd) and the Urraween Rd roundabout (at Richard Charles Dve), with signalised intersections at Denman Camp Road and Grevillea St. Providing new traffic lanes, cycle lanes & separated off-road pathway. The project was delivered for the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Boundary Road – Denmans Camp Rd to Kawungan Way, Hervey Bay – Fraser Coast, Qld (2021-2024)

Scope of Work

Greenfield Roadwork Construction:

  • TMR specifications applicable to several work elements.
  • Detailed traffic & construction staging planning & execution required
  • PUP management incl. working around existing water, sewer, drainage, underground & overhead electrical & fibre optics
  • Water (up to 600 dia.) & sewer (up to 6.5m deep) installations & relocations
  • Substantial cut-to-fill & cut-to-spoil bulk earthworks, incl. unsuitable treatments
  • Extensive RCP & RCBC drainage, incl. management of temporary arrangements & connection to existing networks
  • Extensive unbound & plant-mixed lightly-bound pavements
  • Extensive HD (& MD) asphalt pavements
  • Substantial Rate 2 street lighting infrastructure & traffic signals/detector loops
  • Heavy concrete to extensive drainage structures & retaining wall
  • Concrete kerbing, traffic islands, pedestrian refuges & paths
  • Install & upgrade signage & linemarking
  • Topsoiling, turf & hydromulch.
  • Liaison & coordination with local councils, companies & residents

Value engineering options identified by SGQ included the following adopted measures:

  • Switch to rock & fabric/geogrid subgrade replacement in lieu of a mixture of trial possible subgrade treatments – providing stronger, more reliable and efficient installation

Notable Aspects

Project Challenges and Extensive Scope Delivery:

  • Incurring over 3m of rainfall to site through delivery
  • 70,000+ m3 of earthworks removed from site
  • 4km of drainage pipe and 1km of box culverts (inc. 160 drainage pits)
  • 5km conduits installed
  • 70,000+ tonnes of roadbase delivered
  • 25,000+ tonnes of rock delivered
  • 8,000+ m3 of concrete placed in:
    • 13,000m2 footpath
    • 4000m2 median infill
    • 6,800m2 concrete drain
    • 10km of kerb
  • 25,000 tonnes Asphalt placed

Construction methods:

  • Dilapidation studies & vibration management required, especially for the earthworks & paving works (with regard to adjacent residences & businesses)
  • Earthworks required special management for soft soils – rock, geofabric, geogrids
  • Management of existing live drainage outlets being incorporated into new RCP & RCBC network

Community liaison:

  • Large number of local residents immediately adjacent to the works
  • Consultation/liaison achieving desirable outcomes for all stakeholders, incl. residents, adjacent businesses, bus & emergency services and FCRC
